Circle of Design 2016, Minnesota’s favorite fashion show, has taken this year to the next level. With new and exciting sponsors like Aesthetic Institute of Edina and Styles and Statements, it is possible to expand the efforts of the show to be extremely supportive to its student designers and local businesses.
In fact, of the three students participating in the show this year, Tabitha Andelin will be fully sponsored by show creator Shelly Gensmer and Circle of Design alum Gina Moorhead to help her launch her career before she even graduates! Circle of Design is the first show to offer such an incredible opportunity to a student designer -- it will be exciting to see how this opportunity will nurture Andelin’s career.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/tabitha-andelin.jpg"><img class="wp-image-968130 aligncenter" alt="tabitha andelin" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/tabitha-andelin.jpg" width="340" height="403" /></a>
Both Andelin and Moorheard are presenting lines from their respective brands, 'Andelin Active Wear' and 'House of Gina Marie.' Though their brands are very different -- 'House of Gina Marie' specializes in more tailored looks whereas 'Andelin Active Wear' creates active wear that can carry over from the workout to everyday life -- these two talented designers are both going to bring something incredible to the show.
“It will be fun to discover common denominators, find avenues of relevance and marry our two specializations,” Moorehead explains.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/House-of-Gina-Marie-design.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-968128 aligncenter" alt="House of Gina Marie design" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/House-of-Gina-Marie-design.jpg" width="302" height="538" /></a>
Moorhead, who is an experienced and established designer, has been a self-proclaimed “open book,” to Andelin, sharing her wisdom in manufacturing, design and the nature of the fashion business. Andelin is taking full advantage of the opportunity to learn from such an accomplished designer.
“She is teaching me her process and the lessons she has learned," Andelin said. "Gina has given me all kinds of helpful advice both large and small. Learning from her has been invaluable to me.”
The Circle of Design story this year will be centered on the consumer and the various outfit requirements she may have. Andelin is introducing her line, titled "And Live" to show how a woman’s workout clothes may translate to her other daily activities.
In describing her line she says:
“My intention with these designs is to acknowledge that life is crazy and chaotic but with an active lifestyle you can re-focus, tackle all those daily problems, “And Live.'”
<img class=" wp-image-968129 aligncenter" alt="design by Andelin Active Wear" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/design-by-Andelin-Active-Wear.jpe" width="275" height="414" />
In addition to Andelin and Moorhead's lines, there will also be collections shown featuring looks to wear to work, to play, and to go out, whether it is to a gala, a fundraiser, or just happy hour! Presenting these lines are fellow students Shengjie Li of the University of Minnesota and Victor Farma of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Minnesota local Shaima Eshmawy will also be presenting a sexy and edgy line titled “Reviled.” Circle of Design alum Stacie Vanags of FIN sur FIN fame will also be returning to showcase her trademark California surfer designs.
With the exciting story set in place, up and coming fresh designers, and brand new sponsors, Circle of Design is set in motion to be the best show of the Minnesota fashion scene. Be sure to head to Mill City Nights on April 23rd at 7:00 pm to be a part of this amazing event.

Circle of Design, the Minnesota fashion favorite runway show, will return in 2016 with a new exciting concept and fresh designers. On April 23rd, Minnesota Fashion Week will be infused with beautiful designs, compelling dance performances, and Circle of Design’s famed story-telling method of runway fashion.
The show next year will be hosted at Mill City Nights in Minneapolis at 7:00 pm and will include both men’s and women’s fashion, taking viewers through the day of the working man and woman and how their wardrobe changes day to night.
One of the biggest changes to the show next year is the inclusion of students -- which makes Circle of Design one of the only runway shows around to allow student participation.
Show creator Shelly Gensmer explained her decision to include students:
“It’s important to include those who work hard at the chance to grace our closets with their talents. We decorate ourselves with the brands of designers who have already conquered that struggle. By pairing the more seasoned designers with the students we complete the circle, pass along some wisdom and encouragement, and gift that student with an incredibly unique opportunity.”
One of the students will be sponsored by Circle of Design alum Gina Moorhead of House of Gina Marie, whose designs have been featured in each show thus far, and will produce a fully finished and sellable line.
A fan-favorite aspect of Circle of Design since year one has been the thrilling dance performances. They will return full force next year, choreographed by Circle of Design alum Alicia Rodriguez, who is ecstatic to take on the role of lead choreographer for her first year.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/hosts-with-shelly.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-874324 aligncenter" alt="hosts-with-shelly" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/hosts-with-shelly.jpg" width="333" height="461" /></a>
Christopher Straub will also return next year as host of Circle of Design 2016, with a co-host to be announced in January. Straub is thrilled to be a part of the show for his third consecutive year, citing the integration of the fashion and the dance performances as one of his favorite aspects of the show.
“This year has an amazing list of designers and I cannot wait to see what they’ve done for the event,” Straub says.
I can’t wait either, and will be heading right over to <a href="http://www.circleofdesign.net" target="_blank">circleofdesign.net</a> to pick up my tickets, which are $30 for general admission and $65 for V.I.P. packages.

Circle of Design 2014 began with a powerful presence. The lights dimmed as JLW Productions dance crew took to the stage and kicked off the show with a beautifully choreographed dance to Lorde’s chilling rendition of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” The dance- though only a few minutes long, which incorporated costume changes, the use of props, and the engagement of the audience. It was a compelling performance that set the stage and expectation for an incredible show.
The show lived up to its expectations, incorporating many elements in order to convey the story that creator Shelly Gensmer was determined to tell. She enlisted the help of hosts Christopher Straub, of Project Runway fame, and Miss Minnesota herself, Jessica Scheu -- both brought their personalities and celebrity aura to the introduction of the show.
Gensmer’s desire was to take the audience throughout the history of global fashion through dance and the garments of five local designers. Each of the five designers represented a different region of the world and its fashion. The regions represented in the show were Latin America, Asia, French Bohemia, Scotland, and Italy. Each designer created a collection to embody this culture’s influence on fashion with Sinead Odessa representing Latin America, Gina Moorehead of House of Gina Marie representing Asia, Stacie Vanags of FIN sur FIN representing French Bohemia, Marina Qualey representing Scotland, and Jess Hammond of Mien Kielo representing Italian fashion, respectively.

Odessa’s designs took the stage first, accompanied by exciting, upbeat Latin music. Her beautiful garments featured bright colors and loud prints, a staple of Latin culture and fashion. Her clever use of mixed prints, including an excellent print featuring the popular Latina artist Frida Kahlo, caused her designs to stand out and pop on the runway.
Next came designs by House of Gina Marie, introduced by an engaging Asian-influence dance number by JLW Productions. Designer Gina Moorehead spent time in Vietnam during her design process, and it shows in her pattern and fabric choice. Her garments were comfortable-looking and fashionable, often dominated by small, intricate patterns of Asian influence. My personal favorite was a stunning black and white jumpsuit that embodied the simplicity and beauty of Moorehead’s designs.

French Bohemia took over the stage with an upbeat dance to “Bohemian Raphsody” to introduce the designs of Stacie Vanags of FIN sur FIN. Vanags’ designs display a sense of effortlessness that is rare in modern-day fashion. She manages to make complete comfort a fashionable and stylish thing -- what may feel like sweatpants looks high fashion and beautiful. The loose fabrics and ease of the garments coupled with styling -- which included chained headpieces -- is a stunning representation of Bohemian style.
Kicking off the start of the Scottish portion of the show was my favorite part of the night. Three girls did an incredible dance incorporating traditional Riverdancing with a modern, hip-popping twist! The dance set the tone for Marina Qualey’s “Great Scot” collection, which blended traditional and modern Celtic designs just as the dance had. Qualey’s show-stopping piece was a hand-made plaid cape that was the picture of Celtic-inspired elegance.

Italian fashion through history was brought to us by the designs of Jess Hammond of Mien Kilo. Nearly every era of Italian fashion seemed to be represented in Hammond’s collection, from the long cream-colored gowns of ancient Rome to the short, colorful, flowing dresses of modern-day Italy.
New York City, known as the world’s greatest melting pot, was the last line to take the stage. One garment from each designer came onto the runway one last time, but was restyled to show how cultures blend together to create new styles and fashions. Creator Shelly Gensmer used items from her consignment shop Dressing Room Dojo to restyle the five looks from the designers. She also included a look that was head to toe Dojo, giving her shop its own representation on the runway as well.
[caption id="attachment_481864" align="aligncenter" width="347"]<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Jessica-Scheu-Christopher-Straub-and-Shelly-Gensmer.jpg"><img class="wp-image-481864 " alt="Jessica Scheu Christopher Straub and Shelly Gensmer" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Jessica-Scheu-Christopher-Straub-and-Shelly-Gensmer.jpg" width="347" height="461" /></a> Jessica Scheu (left) Christopher Straub (middle) and Shelly Gensmer (right).[/caption]
Christopher Straub and Jessica Scheu closed out the show together, thanking Gensmer, the designers, and Jeremiah Lewis-Walker of JLW Productions for putting on such a fantastic show. However, the excitement didn’t end there. Pop-up shops featuring garments from every designer and from Dressing Room Dojo allowed audience members to not only meet the talented designers, but purchase some of the looks they saw and loved on the runway. There was also a VIP room complete with music, desserts, and free drinks.
Honestly, I can’t sing the praises of this year’s Circle of Design show enough. It was engaging, thrilling, and educational. I felt as though I learned a lot about the history of worldwide fashion. It also offered the opportunity to see and support five designers from Minnesota.

The 2015 Minnesota State Boys' Hockey <a href="http://minnesotaconnected.com/arts-entertainment/minnesota-boys-high-school-hockey-tournament-at-xcel-through-saturday_442431/">Tournament</a> wrapped up on Saturday night in St. Paul. Lakeville North won the AA Championship, capping off a perfect 31-0 season with a 4-1 victory over Duluth East in the final. In Class A, East Grand Forks won its second straight title, defeating Hermantown 5-4 in the championship game. (This was the 6th straight loss for Hermantown in the final. Ouch.)
While winners were crowned for their hockey achievements at Xcel Energy Center, a coronation of a different sort was taking place on YouTube. The 2015 Minnesota State High School All Hockey Hair Team was announced on Saturday. This year's team, as usual, was amazing...
This is the 5th year of what is becoming a very popular tradition. The first four videos (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9NW6KB9C8Y">2011</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBW8KJw0YwI">2012</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUkKOnXMmGg">2013</a>, and my favorite <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIcoMI6rjaM">2014</a>) have accumulated over 2,000,000 views on YouTube to date, with their total view count spiking up this time each year as the series gains notoriety. It's no wonder the AHHT videos have become such a hit. The crude production values and droll commentary from the series' creator and narrator are pure comedy gold.
For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon of "hockey hair", <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/">Urban Dictionary</a> defines it as follows:
"Long, untamed hair usually capped with a hat with wings of hair flowing and curling up from under it. This hair flows easily out of hockey [helmets] and is becoming popular with hockey players everywhere."
and
"A mid-length, fluffyish mullet associated with hockey players, especially those from Canada and Eastern Europe in the 1990s."
and
"Known as the 'Texas Flop Top', 'Arkansas Waterfall' and other names is long [hair] almost to the point of the shoulders. Curling and popping out of the helmet."
For those unfamiliar with Urban Dictionary, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Dictionary">here</a> is the Wikipedia article describing it.
If you don't know about Wikipedia, then I sincerely don't know how you function in 2015.
Enjoy the flow. And get 'em next year Hairmantown.

Minnesota’s favorite fashion show is back for round two! Circle of Design burst onto the scene for spring fashion week last March, and Minnesota Connected brought you <a href="http://minnesotaconnected.com/lifestyle/fashion/circle-of-design-fashion-show-amazes-guests_224301/" target="_blank">full coverage of the event</a>. The show last year, which featured three designers, a full dance crew, and an epic story taking viewers through the stages of a garment's creation, was sold out at over 300 tickets. This year will be bigger, better, and the center-stage event for spring fashion week 2015!
Executive Director and Creator Shelly Gensmer, who headed the show last year, wanted to take the many successful elements to last year's show and expand on them. “The dance crew is back, which is great. Jeremiah is amazing so he’ll come up with something really great to fit the theme of the show,” she says, speaking of Jeremiah Lewis-Walker, who heads JLW Productions, a performance production company. “Christopher Straub is also back to host again.” Straub, an amazing designer and Project Runway alum, was one of the first to sign on to Circle of Design 2015, and he will be bringing his fantastic personality to the runway as host for the show.
[caption id="attachment_426837" align="aligncenter" width="422"]<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Shelly-Gensmer-and-I-at-last-years-show.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-426837 " alt="Shelly Gensmer and I at last years show" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Shelly-Gensmer-and-I-at-last-years-show.jpg" width="422" height="486" /></a> Leah Putz (left) and Shelly Gensmer.[/caption]
One of Gensmer’s biggest goals for Circle of Design 2015 is to bolster the show. While last year featured three designers, this year will see no less than five! Stacie Vanags of FIN sur FIN and Gina Moorehead of House of Gina Marie will be returning to the runway after the success of last year’s show. Joining them is Jess Rodysill of Mien Kielo, as well as Sinead Kelly and Marina Qualey, both students of the University of Minneasota.
Last year’s theme was a fascinating portrayal of the lifecycle of a garment, from creation, to purchase, to resale. A circular lifecycle, thus the title “Circle of Design.” I asked Gensmer how the theme this year will reflect the title. “This year we’re using the term ‘circle’ to mean global,” she says. “Each designer will be representing pieces from a different culture, so people will be able to see the development of fashion throughout the world, globally. The designers each chose a category they feel inspires them in the work they do so I’m excited to see what they come up with.”
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/dancers-2.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-426838 aligncenter" alt="dancers 2" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/dancers-2.jpg" width="404" height="491" /></a>
There will be more designers, more excitement, and more tickets! This year 350 tickets are available for the show that will be held April 3rd at the Westin Galleria in Edina from 7-10pm. Pre-sale tickets are available on <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/circle-of-design-2015-tickets-15676206957?aff=eac2" target="_blank">Eventbrite</a>.

Katherine Von Drachenberg, better known as Kat Von D, is a world-famous tattoo artist who burst onto the mainstream stage in 2007, when TLC made her the star of the television series called L.A. Ink. She started as a mere tattoo artist, but quickly transformed herself into a entrepreneur, building herself an empire including her own tattoo shop (High Voltage), an art gallery (Wonderland L.A.), a clothing line and much more. In 2008, Kat began what was to become a long and very successful partnership with the cosmetics company Sephora. What started as a simple make up line has expanded to include fragrances, foundations, and much more. Each year Kat releases a new collection with Sephora and each year the variety of products grows and is enriched.
I’ve been a devoted follower of Kat’s makeup endeavors since 2008, when she launched her first collection of eyeshadows, mascara, and lipstick. I’ve been there to see it grow and I’ve done my best to keep up with the new products as they are released. Her eyeshadow palettes are my favorite -- not only are they long-lasting and waterproof, but they come in a variety of colors, with at least eight different shades in each palette!
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/highlights-from-the-studded-kiss-collection.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-396040 aligncenter" alt="highlights from the studded kiss collection" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/highlights-from-the-studded-kiss-collection.jpg" width="236" height="288" /></a>
I also have a particular fondness for her lipsticks. I consider myself a lipstick junkie -- it’s a bit of a weakness and Kat’s beautiful shades haven’t helped my addiction. I haven’t yet gotten there, but I hope to someday possess all of her shades. I am especially excited about the Studded Kiss lip collection she has recently released. The collection includes fan favorites from previous collections, as well as several brand new shades.
Previously, Kat’s products have only been available at Sephora locations or on the Sephora website. Now, however, Kat has taken her make up line into her own hands, launching her own website to market and sell her products, titled <a href="http://katvondbeauty.com/" target="_blank">katvondbeauty.com</a>. While they will still be available at Sephora stores and on the Sephora website, Kat now has her own space to sell her products directly, hype up new collections, provide tutorials and interact more with her customers.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Without-any-filters-this-is-a-before-after-of-ONE-thin-layer-of-my-Lock-It-Foundation-Kat.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-396042 aligncenter" alt="Without any filters this is a before after of ONE thin layer of my Lock-It Foundation - Kat" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Without-any-filters-this-is-a-before-after-of-ONE-thin-layer-of-my-Lock-It-Foundation-Kat.jpg" width="512" height="512" /></a>
Yes, I said that correctly. Interacting with her customers. One of the most exciting aspects of this new website is that Kat has been sharing photos from Instagram with the hashtag #KVDLook of fans wearing her products. I love checking the website and seeing new ways that people are wearing the products.
The tutorials are another one of my favorite aspects of the website. I followed Kat’s Poetica tutorial to create a daytime eye shadow look that I loved. I partnered this eye look with a mixture of two of Kat’s shades on my lips -- the dark cherry color Homegirl, and the bright pink Backstage Bambi, both of which are available in the Studded Kiss Collection. I loved the look I was able to achieve using Kat’s easy tutorial, and I look forward to following more of her tutorials to create new looks for myself to wear!

What I love most about Kat’s products is the confidence they give me. When I put on my makeup in the morning it gives me a boost of self esteem that lasts with me throughout the day, as all of her products are long lasting! I love the fact that she has created this website so people like me who use her products can learn different ways to wear her makeup and can have the opportunity to show off our own interpretations.

Now that school is starting back up, you’ve probably picked out your outfits for the first week or so of school, right? Maybe not, but likely your first day (I did).
If you're hanging out with college age friends as often as I am, you're almost guaranteed to hear about someone getting ribbed over their wardrobe choice, especially if they're going out on the weekend.
A common complaint I've been hearing is of pure hatred toward cargo shorts from some (more often the ladies) and indifference from other (more often the dudes). The seemingly innocuous attire has some people up in arms about it's less-than-trendy appeal.
Cargo shorts are derived from cargo pants just as jean shorts are derived from jeans (genius, I know). Cargo pants were first worn by British Military members in 1938 with more pockets for holding ammunition and radios -- the apparel was brought to the U.S. during World War II. While most civilians don't actually carry much cargo with them at all times, the shorts were popular a decade ago.
Best basketball player ever, Michael Jordan, has even made headlines about cargo shorts. He was kicked off of La Gorce Country Club's golf course in Miami in late 2012 for refusing to take off his cargo shorts and the club asked him to never come back.
<img class="wp-image-275063 aligncenter" title="michael jordan cargo shorts" alt="" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/2695425179_0a1dd5abf3_z.jpg" width="512" height="382" />
When even Michael Jordan, an undoubtedly cool dude, can't get away with wearing cargo shorts, there must be something horribly, miserably wrong with these "frumpy" shorts. Part of might just be that there are people who really hate them, while others are just lukewarm on them and don't have too strong of an opinion.
To be honest, I used to wear them quite often and I'm not as cool as Michael Jordan. For a few years they were really popular if they were plaid. Not now. It's all about slim-fitting chino shorts with no pattern. A cursory look on Twitter dug up a bunch of opinions on the shorts. So why are cargo shorts now causing a kerfuffle around college campuses and elsewhere? I researched the topic and found numerous forum questions regarding the topic from Vogue to Bodybuilding.com to Reddit. Then, I went out and talked to a few people about their opinions on the fashion.
"This summer I was told that they are no longer 'in' so currently working them out [of my wardrobe] but I have no problem with a good pair," Mark Magelssen, 21, said when asked what he thought about cargoes.
But Mark just heard that they were no longer "in" he didn't necessarily choose not to wear them because of his own choice.
"They make you look bulky and bottom heavy and they're not cute" Meg Snyder, 21, said.
"What are you putting in those pockets? It's just distracting, it's so bulky." Lydia Quint, 20, said.
"I think it depends on what they're styled with." Nandu Ganesh, 19, said when asked about the appropriate time to wear them.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/2643301606_3820fc43c7_z.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-275064 aligncenter" alt="2643301606_3820fc43c7_z" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/2643301606_3820fc43c7_z.jpg" width="512" height="384" /></a>
Women on Twitter were really tearing them apart, even noticing the hate towards cargo shorts. I encourage you to see <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=cargo%20shorts&src=typd" target="_blank">what people are saying</a>.
"Cargo shorts can hold everything except a conversation with a woman" by @marymargaret9 was easily the most popular with 83 favorites.
"Going away to school and witnessing instances of people being judged more for wearing cargo shorts than doing hard drugs" by @jh00die shows how bad it can be.
"Boys that wear cargo shorts still, are you still in middle school or?" by @Sam_Joyner and many others are examples of the apparent hate on the fashion, while other users were mainly asking why there is so much hate.
Not everyone outright hates them or has really thought about it as a fashion faux pas, though.
"They're okay in my book," Natalie Kay, 21, said. "Unless they have too many pockets or if they're camo."
"I think cargo shorts provide comfortable wear with the ability for storage, but I don't wear them." Connor Wipli, 21, said. "I just wear golf shorts."
"I guess they're fine by me" Melissa Bownik, 23, said.
"I'd say they're pretty groovy if you need to hold things in your shorts," Jake Schulzetenberg, 22, said.
In my favorite answer, Schulzetenberg also sarcastically added that it would be a bad idea to wear them "when swimming if you have bricks in your pockets." It is actually a really bad idea.
"I think it's more of a trend on how Cargo shorts just look god awful," Reddit user DrugReeference said, echoing the sentiments of many other users. "I came from an area where it was alright to wear cargo [shorts] in elementary school but after that it just looked ridiculous. People in /r/malefashionadvice explain it pretty well. I think when it comes down to it, a lot of fraternities try to form an image of young-professional men who plan on being successful when their older and usually when you imagine successful people, you imagine them as clean cut and cargo [shorts] simply don't fit that image. Wear what you want, I just think cargo shorts look ridiculous. They're too long, have too many pockets, and generally do not look good on people."
I can see both sides of this argument: the practicality of the extra pockets, and the slim, clean look that comes when you take them away.
This topic has also been quite divisive. GQ even wrote about how cargo pants are <a href="http://www.gq.com/style/blogs/the-gq-eye/2013/05/dropping-knowledge-the-cargo-pant.html" target="_blank">coming back</a> a bit (then again, it was Chris Paul wearing them) and I found another article vehemently <a href="http://www.brobible.com/gear/article/in-defense-of-cargo-shorts/" target="_blank">defending the wardrobe choice</a> [warning: vulgarity].
I can also imagine a few scenarios for when it might be more appropriate to wear them, although according to some it would never be. When is it okay to wear cargo shorts? I would say on a hike, at the airport, in the military (pants), as a child or at a factory or warehouse job. Just refrain from wearing them on a date or interview. Or refer to this terrific <a href="http://elitedaily.com/humor/heres-flowchart-help-decide-wear-cargo-shorts/621364/" target="_blank">flowchart</a> I happened upon during my research. If you'd like other advice, ask those with more fashion sense than you.
"I think that [cargo shorts] are fine, but in a dulled-down version," Courtney Steeves, 19, who has her own <a href="http://withloveandlightcourtney.com/" target="_blank">fashion blog</a> said. "A person does not need that many pockets. Basically just buy khaki shorts."
I would wear them when I worked in a factory for things like a box-cutter or tape. For hikers or travelers, it doesn't matter what you look like as long as you get where you're going comfortably. Same goes for children, we want them to look nice, but no one is really judging harshly.
I think cargoes will be around because of their practicality, but won't be high-fashion by any means. I think they'll eventually come back around just like every style seems to do every few decades.

RetroRama came to the Minnesota History Center on Friday, May 16. It was an event to celebrate the newest exhibit by local photographer <a href="http://www2.mnhs.org/library/findaids/sv000149.xml" target="_blank">Charles Chamblis</a> who was famous for documenting the music and club scene of Minneapolis in the 70’s and 80’s.
Attendees came dressed in their favorite retro garb -- platform boots, mini skirts and afros included. The event was fairly informal, with a setup that encouraged people to sip craft cocktails from Du Nord while shopping vintage from local favorites like Lula’s, Flamingo’s Divine Finds, and The Spectacle Shoppe.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Retro.jpg"><img class="wp-image-261764 aligncenter" alt="Retro" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Retro.jpg" width="420" height="478" /></a>
There was a retro fashion show emceed by the “famous for being famous” Fancy Ray McCloney and looks created by local fashion designers ArielSimone, Emma Berg, Max Lohrback, Samantha Rei, and Kerry Riley. Hollie Mae styled the runway show with accessories from Mona Williams.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Retro4.jpg"><img class="wp-image-261765 aligncenter" alt="Retro4" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Retro4.jpg" width="420" height="630" /></a>
The event was a great blend of retro and modern and the Minnesota History Center was a perfect venue to set the mood for the evening. People wandered the exhibits while mingling with friends and strangers alike. It was a fun event and, if nothing else, it was worth it to watch traditionally tailored business professionals in their best 70’s costumes dancing to funk music.

Leading up to Friday, April 18th, the buzz surrounding the Circle of Design fashion show was mounting. When the doors of the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel opened, expectations were high. After all, with designers such as Samantha Rei, Gina Marie, and Stacie Vanags of FIN Sur FIN, and with household name Christopher Straub as host and emcee, we were certainly in for a good show, right?
Absolutely right! Guests were given free drinks in a welcoming waiting area with a bar until the doors opened for the show at 7 pm. Seats were oriented around the catwalk, which was centered in the middle of the large ballroom. Each seat contained a swag bag, with numerous gifts for the guests from the various sponsors of the show. Excitement swirled throughout the room as people speculated about what they were about to see. Finally, at 8 o’clock sharp, the lights dimmed and Christopher took the stage.
[caption id="attachment_224381" align="aligncenter" width="403"]<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/christopher-and-i.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-224381 " alt="Leah Putz and Christopher Straub" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/christopher-and-i.jpg" width="403" height="538" /></a> Leah Putz and Christopher Straub[/caption]
Christopher, as well as highlighting his own excitement for the show, gave guests a hint of what they were about to witness; which is the birth and creation of a design. The show would walk guests through the process of a design, from the early planning stages, to the finished garment, and then to the garment fully accessorized. The story would also be told with the help of the JLW Productions dance crew. With his words, “Enjoy the show,” he exited the stage and the song “Work Bitch” by Britney Spear began and the dance team took the runway, stunning guests with their talent of hip hop style dance and ushering in the first segment of the runway show.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/muslins.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-224386 aligncenter" alt="muslins" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/muslins.jpg" width="426" height="584" /></a>
About halfway through the song, the dancers exited the stage as the first model came out, adorned in black leggings and a black tank top, covered by muslins. Muslins are the white fabrics that designers use to create the outline of their design and form their ideas. Model after model strutted their way down the runway barefoot, somehow even making the muslins of the three designers look good. The best was yet to come however, and as the final model left the stage the dance crew reclaimed it with the new hit “Talk Dirty” by Jason Derulo.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/models-Devin-and-Christina-in-Gina-Marie27s-looks.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-224384 aligncenter" alt="models Devin and Christina in Gina Marie27s looks" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/models-Devin-and-Christina-in-Gina-Marie27s-looks.jpg" width="431" height="464" /></a>
Again halfway through the song, the dancers walked offstage as the first model came out. This time she was wearing a coat designed by Samantha Rei -- her coats made their way down the runway as spectators looked on dazzled by the transformation from muslin to finished design. The same awe was kindled as Gina Marie’s and FIN Sur FIN’s designs came out as well. As each song ended, it seamlessly morphed into another. The models kept up pace with the music, claiming the runway as their own and making sure to pose long enough for guests to get full views of the garments.
“Put the Gun Down” by ZZ Ward boomed through the speakers as the dancers stormed the stage again. The transition was smooth and I was amazed at how well the show transitioned through segments, switching quickly from dancers to runway. Finally, the last segment of the show began. Though we were seeing the same finished garments as before, the incredible styling achieved by designers and accessories featured from Maurice’s gave the looks a whole new edge. Each garment was accessorized to specifically suit the wearability of the outfit. For instance, with a swimsuit and shawl from FIN Sur FIN designs, the model rocked a long necklace and a pair of dark sunglasses.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/models-Cameron-and-Christina-in-looks-by-FinSurFin.jpg"><img class=" wp-image-224385 aligncenter" alt="models Cameron and Christina in looks by FinSurFin" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/models-Cameron-and-Christina-in-looks-by-FinSurFin.jpg" width="429" height="549" /></a>
The finale of the show highlighted the element of consignment brought to the show by the store of the show’s executive producer, Shelly Gensmer. The store is <a href="http://minnesotaconnected.com/lifestyle/fashion/dressing-room-dojo-offers-designers-clothing-at-discount-prices_146994/" target="_blank">Dressing Room Dojo</a> located in Lakeville. To incorporate the element of consignment, silence filled the room as the lights dimmed. A track of white noise came on as three models strolled across the runway, each wearing a design from one of the three designers featured in the show. They stopped at the same time, each occupying a different third of the runway. They striped off their garments, revealing simple black leggings and tank tops. They dropped the garments to the floor and exited the runway just as three more models, dressed in the same leggings and tanks, entered. These models each stopped next to the garments, snatched them up, and left the stage. It was obvious that this portion existed to represent the change of ownership that comes with consignment, and how the life cycle of a garment doesn’t end with its completion, but continues through its ownership.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Stacie-of-FinSurFin-with-one-of-her-shawl-designs.jpg"><img class="wp-image-224382 aligncenter" alt="Stacie of FinSurFin with one of her shawl designs" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Stacie-of-FinSurFin-with-one-of-her-shawl-designs.jpg" width="484" height="509" /></a>
The show ended with the dance team dancing to “Into the Blue” by Kylie Minogue. As they finished, Christopher Straub took the stage once more to thank all the contributing factors in the show, including JLW Productions, the models, the hair and make-up team, and the designers. Last to take the stage was the brains behind it all, Shelly Gensmer. Shelly spoke about the creation of the show, and about her shop Dressing Room Dojo.
After the show, VIP guests were invited to an after party featuring a DJ, photographers, and the opportunity to have grammy-style photos taken in front of a Dressing Room Dojo backdrop. The designers stationed themselves near the area, so guests could meet them, speak one on one, and even try on and purchase some of the pieces!
Though it was Shelly’s first time as executive producer of a fashion show, she certainly nailed it. She may have found her new calling in life -- as I left, I didn’t hear a single bad word about the show. Guests raved about the talent of the dancers, the beauty of the designs, and the welcoming atmosphere. I got a statement from guest Holly Williams, who said:
“I didn’t know what to expect but the show far exceeded any expectations I might have had! The dancers were incredible, and seeing the process through the designs was amazing. The show was very cool and entertaining.”

This was an anonymous submission from one of our readers.
Known for his outrageous take on style and runway, Grant Whitaker once again graced the stage literally and figuratively for the 5th Annual Fashion Ball, a fundraiser performed by Ballet of the Dolls at the historic Ritz Theatre.
Choreographed by the legendary Myron Johnson and styled by Grant Whitaker Style, this year’s theme “Dollnation” followed a troupe of dancers through diverse depictions of dolls — from voodoo to super galactic to clowns. It was an energetic mix of theatre, dance, and fashion.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ballet-dolls-2.jpg"><img class="aligncenter" alt="ballet dolls 2" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ballet-dolls-2.jpg" width="570" height="381" /></a>
Each dance performance was followed by a runway show, with fashions from local designer Lindsey Hopkins, Grethen House, and Fashion Avenue. As expected, the costumes and fashion were outrageous, transporting audience members into a surreal world of make-believe turned reality.
As models made their turn at the end of the runway, spectators were greeted with a skull embedded in the long hair of the models. In other another portion of the show, models were turned into Technicolor dreams, sporting colorful curls and dreads and equally playful garments.
Dancers' costumes were no less dramatic, with red fur coats, striped pom hats, and feathered tails. The only questionable and slightly terrifying portion of the evening was when the dancers donned life-size stuffed-animal costumes and danced about the stage. I expected nothing less than a wild mix of creativity and flash, and the show delivered.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ballet-dolls-3.jpg"><img class="aligncenter" alt="ballet dolls 3" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ballet-dolls-3.jpg" width="570" height="380" /></a>
For a night filled with dance, fashion, and entertainment, it most certainly didn’t disappoint. Brazen entertainment aside, Ballet of the Dolls stands for equality, opportunity, and expression. They support anyone with a passion for dance — regardless of gender, body type, or experience level.
Check out the rest of the Doll’s <a href="http://www.ritz-theater.org/ballet-of-the-dolls-season/" target="_blank">season</a> to catch some fascinating and outlandish performances, and be sure to be, if nothing else, entertained.

Shelly Gensmer had a dream that someday, she could perfect the thrift shop recipe and create an amazing boutique. Four months ago, she made that dream a reality and opened Dressing Room Dojo in Lakeville, MN. Not only does Dressing Room Dojo offer thrift shop prices, but also offers styling services and closet clean-outs by appointment as well. Each item is examined in person by Shelly or a member of her friendly staff, and cleaned before it is placed in the store.
Walking into the store is exciting.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Screen-Shot-2014-01-18-at-1.18.29-PM.png"><img class=" wp-image-146999 aligncenter" alt="Dressing Room Dojo - Lakeville - Now Open - Designer Clothes " src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Screen-Shot-2014-01-18-at-1.18.29-PM.png" width="570" height="725" /></a>
The natural lighting coupled with the store’s lamps illuminate the shop and highlight the signature color of the store, which is a pinkish-purple. Though the store has an amazing selection to offer — everything from shoes, jewelry and purses to jackets, jeans and dresses — the set up in the store seems anything but cluttered.

Organized professionally, it is easy to find what you’re looking for and to browse without being completely overwhelmed and flustered. The staff is also very welcoming and eager to assist with any questions or help one may need. Dressing rooms are available as well.

But you don’t need to go to the store to experience its fashion forward clothing and accessory options. They have a <a href="http://www.dressingroomdojo.com/" target="_blank">great website</a> that allows customers to order online. The website is easy to navigate and even includes a ‘Lookbook’ to help customers see what items may look like on and how outfits can be created using solely Dojo’s inventory.

When ‘stiletto nails’ first burst onto the scene, I was baffled. I wondered, what could be the appeal of having unnaturally long nails that come to a point? I figured they would be a minor fad that would shortly fade out. However, the trend grew, as did my interest in them. I began to wonder where this style came from, assuming it was a new fashion creation because I didn’t remember ever seeing them around before. However, upon further research I discovered that the trend wasn’t new at all. In fact, the first case of a celebrity donning ‘pointy nails’ was as early as the 1950s, when Maila Nurmi wore her stiletto nails extraordinarily long to portray her popular character, <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=vampira&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=boRAUvyVNpOxqwGB14GoDg#imgdii=_" target="_blank">Vampira</a>.
Although the fad faded after that, it is now back with a vengeance. Celebrities such as Beyonce, Kylie Jenner, Dita Von Teese, Lana Del Rey, Project Runway contestant Helen Castillo, and many more are adorning long, pointed nails. While it hasn’t reached popular culture yet, it will soon with so many celebrities on the stiletto-nail-train.
I decided before I judge the pointed nails too harshly, I should give them a try. I went to the salon, asked for acrylics, and they got to work, making my nails longer than they’ve ever been and filing them to a point. Instantly upon completion, I began to understand the appeal to these long, vampy nails. For one, they instantly edge up every outfit, giving it a unique flare. Someone could be wearing pink shorts with a polo shirt, but stiletto nails would still give them that extra amount of sass and punk that is sometimes needed as a woman in this world. Secondly, they elongate the fingers. Coming from someone with short, stubby phalanges, this is a huge plus.
<a href="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Screen-Shot-2013-09-23-at-1.26.25-PM.png"><img class="size-full wp-image-35744 aligncenter" alt="Stiletto Nails - 2013" src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/693/image/minnesotaconnected/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Screen-Shot-2013-09-23-at-1.26.25-PM.png" width="363" height="400" /></a>
Lastly, and probably most importantly, they come with a sense of power and confidence. I was nervous to walk around with such long, pointy nails because they haven’t quite bridged the gap between Hollywood and the real world, yet. However, I feel as though I could take on the world with these nails, and that sense is heightened by the fact that it took bravery to give them a try. It takes a sense of courage for an average girl to don an uncommon style. That courage shows in the beauty of the nail. And that courage is something that every woman could use, whether you’re choosing to file your nails to a point, or just wear that tank top you’ve always wanted to try.
My little experiment taught me how much I can learn from giving something a chance versus judging it from afar. I’m certainly not going to judge a trend before I try it out myself in the future, and I would recommend others do the samel. You never know what you may like or how something fresh may make you may feel. As for me, I’m going to rock stiletto nails for a very long time.

Well, Minnesota, it took long enough, but summer is finally in full swing and there is nothing I like more than a good excuse to go shopping. Since we can’t zip up our winter boots for most summer outings, I’ve generated a list of the three most important shoes to have for the fleeting warm months.
Let's get started.
#1 The White Lace Up
The most diverse, and arguably most comfortable, shoe that I don during the summer is my plain white lace up sneaker. This shoe can be found anywhere from <a href="https://webmail.sherweb2010.com/owa/redir.aspx?C=1e1khrtrhUCWZH2kmY6spOpR-oDRT9AI1SE4G3cxIIluicjDlswgqlwFm_jOoL0bNpUGPgyshHQ.&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.charlotterusse.com%2fthumbnail%2fShoes%2fSneakers%2fCasual-Sneaks%2fpc%2f2115%2fc%2f2806%2f3027.uts" target="_blank">Charlotte Russe</a> to <a href="https://webmail.sherweb2010.com/owa/redir.aspx?C=1e1khrtrhUCWZH2kmY6spOpR-oDRT9AI1SE4G3cxIIluicjDlswgqlwFm_jOoL0bNpUGPgyshHQ.&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.target.com%2fc%2fsneakers-shoes-women%2f-%2fN-55l4b%23%3flnk%3dgnav_women_1_22%26intc%3d736560%7cnull" target="_blank">Target</a> and normally run for under $14. Because they’re so simple, these shoes can be worn with almost any casual outfit. I usually slip them on with my high waisted purple shorts or a simple sundress and jean jacket. These are my favorite summer shoes because they are perfect for any sunny day occasion. If you’re feeling a little bit edgy, go for the currently hot high-tops. Some prefer them over the lace-ups and they usually come at a similar price.
#2 The Nude Pump
The second shoe on my list is the simple nude pump. This shoe happens to be Kate Middleton’s favorite shoe and there’s a reason why. No matter the height, a nude high heel is a timeless addition to any fabulous outfit. This shoe can be found at almost any clothing retailer, but my favorites come from <a href="https://webmail.sherweb2010.com/owa/redir.aspx?C=1e1khrtrhUCWZH2kmY6spOpR-oDRT9AI1SE4G3cxIIluicjDlswgqlwFm_jOoL0bNpUGPgyshHQ.&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.forever21.com%2fProduct%2fCategory.aspx%3fbr%3df21%26category%3dshoes_high-heels" target="_blank">Forever 21</a>. I usually step into these on my way to work with an a-line dress or if I’m heading out for a night with my friends with some black skinny jeans and a peplump shirt. You can’t go wrong picking a nude pump if you feel like throwing on a bright colored summer dress. The best part of these shoes is that they look and feel elegant on any day you feel like being a little bit extra fabulous.
#3 The Ballet Flat
Last, but certainly not least is the ballet flat. This shoe felt a wave of popularity a few years ago but still hasn’t lost its sparkle. This is because it’s such a comfy practical shoe that can either blend in or stand out. Don’t get me wrong, normally I gush over a five-inch heels, but every once in a while, you need to step out of the stilettos and into something pretty yet pragmatic. Personally, I like to have a pair of red, white, and black flats in my closet because that way I’m never at a loss when it comes to matching it to my outfit. If you're ever near an H&M store, stop in and pick up a cute pair of flats -- they always end up being one of my favorite purchases. These are great beach-going shoes if you’re not one for the flip flops as they are easy to slip on and off and go great with any swim suit or cover up.
So thus completes my list of my favorite summer footwear, choices that range from elegant to practical. Take some of these tips into consideration when picking out your summer outfits ladies.2013-07-08T22:00:00-07:002022-10-28T07:18:06-07:00Anne Millerbernd
