Inside The Minnesota Music Scene: Kevin Bowe

kevin bowe - minneapolis musician

Kevin Bowe has done a lot in his music career. He helped discover blues guitar protege Jonny Lang who has now turned to gospel music and he’s written for everyone from Etta James to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The singer-songwriter-producer extraordinaire has been more than busy these last couple years, though. He released his long-awaited second album, Natchez Trace, with his backing band The Okemah Prophets in 2012. Since then, he has been working non-stop on various projects in the Minneapolis area including a third album of originals...

Blake Shelton Keeps It Country With New Single “Neon Light”

shelton - neon lights

Blake Shelton is back with the first single off his upcoming album, Bringing Back The Sunshine, which is due out September 30. The song is “Neon Light” and if you’ve enjoyed the kind of music he’s put out so far, then the chances are pretty good that you’ll be turning this one up as well. While the song’s drum beat seems to be influenced by hip-hop, no one is going to mistake this for anything other than a country song. Actually, it’s probably one of the more traditional-leaning country songs that have come out so far this year, but that shouldn’t surprise Shelton’s...

Recap of the 2014 'Summer Set Music Festival'

10557753_679463705483193_8882314326992995903_o One of the greatest things of our time is the exponential growth of music festivals. A few years back I watched a documentary on Woodstock. It covered the set up, the music, the finances, and the 400,000 Woodstock attendees. I remember thinking how cool an experience like that would be. And now our generation is lucky enough to have music festivals popping up around the world, creating weekends spent united in music and love. One of these music festivals happens to be a skip and a jump from the Twin Cities set in Somerset, Wisconsin. ...

Alright, you can finally say it now without fearing a bunch of mean tweets or Facebook comments coming at you from millions of Taylor Swift fans: she’s officially gone pop. She even admitted so during her worldwide lifestream yesterday, and proved it with a very catchy new single. The single, “Shake It Off,” is the first to be released from her upcoming first official pop album, 1989, which will be available everywhere October 27 from Big Machine. The song itself is just plain fun and definitely a new direction for her. It’s lyrically her most simple...

'tUnE-yArDs' @ First Avenue

Tune-Yards-Minneapolis-July-FirstAvenue-1

I have a confession. For the longest time I assumed Tune-Yards was fronted by a guy. It wasn't until I finally heard them being discussed that I realized the lead singer was referred to as a "her". That's not to say her, who is Merrill Garbus, voice is bad, far from it actually. Seeing her perform live not only provided an opportunity to hear her unique and distinctive voice in person, but also showed how amazing it was and the incredible range it's capable of. "There's sold out, and then there's sold out" said Garbus, describing how packed First...

'Warped Tour 2014' -- "Best Day Ever"

michael bohn issues warped tour

Warped Tour 2013 branded itself with the slogan “Best Day Ever”, but at this year’s tour I had the best day ever. I was caught up in seeing the bands I came for, enjoying the terrific weather and having fun. For the 20th year of the nationwide tour, there are over 70 bands on nine different stages throughout the day playing a mix of punk, hardcore, alternative, with some rap and soul mixed in as well. Minnesota’s host for the summer concert series is Canterbury Park in Shakopee. A day at Warped Tour is filled with music, people, sun and crowd surfers — oh the crowd surfers. This year I noticed new signage...

'Cut Copy' @ First Avenue

Cut-Copy-First-Avenue-Minneapolis-June-10a

The last time Cut Copy stopped by the mainroom at First Avenue, it turned out to be one hell of a dance party -- this time around was no different. Three years and another album later, the Australian four piece dropped into Minneapolis in support of their new album Free Your Mind and brought their entertaining brand of dance music with them.

The ‘Moonshine Jungle Tour’ Proves Bruno Mars is the Total Package

bruno mars - moonshine jungle tour

In this day and age, you’d be hard-pressed to find any popular solo artist who has the versatility of Bruno Mars. If Justin Timberlake is the odds-on favorite leading male vocalist, Mars is the dark horse. His rise to stardom has at times been both slow and inconsistent -- but after his Super Bowl performance back in February, I think it’s safe to say he’s earned his fame. Back to the concept of versatility, Bruno Mars brings so many levels to his performances that it’s hard not to be impressed. With his full entourage of Hooligans behind him, Mars shifts fluidly from reggae ("Show...

'Jungle' @ Fine Line Music Cafe

Jungle-Fine-Line-Music-Cafe-Minneapolis-June-1

Given the limited or non existent appearances of the band Jungle up to this point, it came as no surprise the confusion the audience had when first seeing the band. The group from Britain has only released a handful of songs, along with a few videos. Those videos and promo pictures definitely insinuate who the band is, but that might not lead to the fact they are four white guys and a girl (at least that's who showed up in Minneapolis last week). I over heard a couple different, "that's not who I expected to see at all" and a "is that them?" from people around me. However, after the initial unexpectedness...
