The Mill City will be saying "hello" to new owners of its second biggest cereal maker within the year.
Missouri-based Post Holdings, Inc. is purchasing Lakeville, Minnesota, food company MOM Brands and its four manufacturing plants, famously known for Malt-O-Meal and its bagged cereal, Post said in a
press release Monday.
The $1.15 billion purchase will merge the third (MOM) and fourth (Post) largest manufacturers of ready-to-eat...!--more-->

One glance around the
Jungle Theater, as my friend and I took our seats for Tuesday night’s opening of
Gertrude Stein and a Companion, I was fairly certain we were the youngest people in the audience by twenty years. There’s an aristocratic air to the design of the Jungle, from the seats to the stage, to the nine page list of donors in the program, to the portrait of Artistic Director Bain Boehlke in the front of every program staring at you like you just spilled ketchup all down the front of your shirt. While many smaller local...

Have you ever wondered why your cable bill is going up?
It’s the result of the
bidding war with the various television networks with your favorite professional sports leagues. To cover the costs of these contract deals, these sports networks have increased their...

Few films about the recession were as unflinchingly grim as JC Chandor’s debut feature
Margin Call. Time and time again, well-meaning, sympathetic characters (and others less so) were given no choice but to act deplorably leading up to the greatest economic disaster since the Great Depression. “It’s all just the same thing over and over; we can’t help ourselves. And you and I can’t control it, or stop it, or even slow it. Or even ever-so-slightly alter it. We just react,” one Wall Street executive stated almost too succinctly. Despite a number of flaws common to first time writers and directors,...

Vaping and electronic cigarettes have gotten more popular since their introduction the mid-2000s, but a recent study found a reason for "vapers" to cut back on their habit.
A study published Wednesday in the
New England Journal of Medicine found that vaping at higher voltages could cause the vapor to include formaldehyde that would be inhaled,
NPR reported.
E-cigarettes heat up a liquid with heating coils that turn the liquid to vapor which is inhaled by the user. The study found the vapor to have more formaldehyde than even regular cigarettes, with between five and fifteen times as much potential of causing cancer over a lifetime.

There are great films and there are classics. Double Indemnity, which plays this Thursday at the Heights Theater as part of their series “
Death Wore Lipstick: The Women of Film Noir,” is easily one of the latter. Even if you haven’t seen it, you know its trademarks: the harsh shadows, jagged edges, quick patter, melodramatic voiceover. It features lines like, “I was thinking about that dame upstairs, and the way she looked at me, and I wanted to see her again, close, without that silly staircase...

After earning their first Big Ten conference win last Saturday against Rutgers at Williams Arena, the Minnesota Golden Gophers Men's basketball team got their second win of the conference schedule Saturday.
The Illinois Fighting Illini came into the game 13-7 (3-4 in the Big Ten) and without several of its best players, including a new walk-on
former manager. The Gophers (13-8 (2-6)) were able to treat the home fans to a...

Minnesota might not be the best place for the
full enormity of the Winter Olympics, but we certainly have made our mark on the trendiest new sport on ice: Downhill Skating. This is the fourth year the slope of the St. Paul Cathedral has been converted into a stage for Red Bull's freshly minted and notably successful experiment (thought to be a $20 million boost to St. Paul's economy). With the...

In most instances, when you go ice fishing at 6:30 a.m. in January, only the serious fishermen will be on the ice to join you.
Then there is the winter
trout-fishing opener on Courthouse Lake in Chaska.
The annual event, which this year occurred on Saturday, Jan. 17, allows winter anglers the opportunity to pull trout – in some cases, extremely large trout – through the ice. When my two friends and I visited the lake this year, we were amazed to see hundreds, literally hundreds of ice houses decorating that lake prior to 7 a.m., with the crack of dawn still an hour away. As we approached the lake that morning, the hum of motorized...
