o-KAT-VON-D-

Katherine Von Drachenberg, better known as Kat Von D, is a world-famous tattoo artist who burst onto the mainstream stage in 2007, when TLC made her the star of the television series called L.A. Ink. She started as a mere tattoo artist, but quickly transformed herself into a entrepreneur, building herself an empire including her own tattoo shop (High Voltage), an art gallery (Wonderland L.A.), a clothing line and much more. In 2008, Kat began what was to become a long and very successful partnership with the cosmetics company Sephora. What started as a simple make up line has expanded to include fragrances, foundations, and much more....

Speaking Minnesotan: ‘Um… Can I Get You a Pop There, Buddy?’

how to speak minnesotan Earlier this year, Minnesota Connected boldly examined an important and controversial topic: Which term ought a proper Minnesotan use when referring to a carbonated soft drink? Readers were divided and Facebook debates ensued but, in the end, the hard data strongly indicated “pop” was the linguistic label most likely to be associated with sugary, fizzed-filled...

'The Football Jones' Week 17 Picks

Happy New Year 2015. 3d

Well, I'm ready for 2015. In the meantime, here's some final football meanderings for the 2014 NFL season...

Twins Best Pitcher Signs Extension

The Minnesota Twins should have a solid rotation for at least the next three seasons. Earlier this week, the Twins and Phil Hughes reached a contract extension that keeps him in a Twins uniform through the 2019 season. The deal, which is worth $58 million over the remaining five years, surpasses the four-year $55 million deal that Ervin Santana signed earlier this month -- it is the largest contract for a Twins pitcher. Hughes’s original contract that he signed after the 2013 season was...

Movie Review -- 'Into the Woods' – Be Careful What You Wish For

into the woods - review Adapted from the music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book originally by James Lapine, Disney tries turning their recent original story live action flops into the first retold story success with Into The Woods this Christmas. Disney's live action film promotions have little effect on my day to day life and it's only when at the theater or passing by a giant bus advert, do some of these future titles actually present themselves to me. Thinking back to such releases as John Carter or The Lone Ranger (both of which I enjoy despite the overwhelming...

Remember the Beer Dabbler Come January!

Minnesota Beer Dabbler Glass

Although for some Minnesotans January can be a flurry of busyness and outdoor activities (while for others it's the complete opposite), the 24th should absolutely take priority for the most important Midwest winter activity: drinking beer. The 2015 Beer Dabbler Winter Carnival has been a growing tradition for Twin Cities beer aficionados: hosting the entire elite cast of our state's breweries (and beyond). The event will offer live music, food trucks, various important beer people, a handful of politicians and much, much more. ...

The Commercialized Christmas Season and Christian Faith

christmas tree

With Christmas around the corner, it is painstakingly obvious how commercialized our values have become. Certainly our nation is a country of many nationalities and religious backgrounds with a seemingly never-ending controversy over the labeling of holidays like Christmas or Easter, as it forcibly imposes one religion upon another. However, it seems for many the Christmas tradition has become an automatic and passing action of the year. It has become standard to see Santa characters and lights adorning homes and shopping malls before Halloween, and by Thanksgiving, strategies have been drawn for the Black Friday shopping battle....

Erosion of Courage (Reflections on 'The Interview' Cancellation)

[caption id="attachment_382796" align="aligncenter" width="570"]Staying Behind the Legal Picture Line at the DMZ A view from behind the yellow line (for photography) in South Korea's Demilitarized Zone across to North Korea[/caption] As I looked across the Demilitarized Zone (a layered valley of autumn-tinged fields and soldiered fences) my heart sank with a heavy realization: Korea had more than governments, economics, armies, allies and living conditions dividing it; the landscape glowered at me as the greatest separation. North Korea was (and is) treeless. It's not that there were a few slopes recently logged or mining...

'The Football Jones' Week 16 Picks: NFC South Special Edition!

nfc-south-huddle Okay, with two weeks to go in this puppy, here's how the NFC South Division standings shake out (excluding the Buccaneers, who are 2-12 and neither here nor there): New Orleans – 6-8 Carolina – 5-8-1 Atlanta – 5-9 Understand: Whoever comes out on top out of this mess will be the #4 seed in the NFC playoffs, and will be at HOME in the first round of the playoffs against the #5 seed, who will, at the very worst, have 10 wins. This is the most exciting division race ever! Scenarios:  The Falcons are at the bottom of the pole right now, and it's very simple for them. Their last two games are against the...

Timberwolves Trade Corey Brewer to Houston

Corey Brewer Trade In an unsurprising move, the Timberwolves (5-19) have traded away small forward and former first-round pick Corey Brewer for the second time, as first reported by Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. Brewer has been with the team since last season, in which he recorded a career-high and franchise record-tying 51 points against the same Houston Rockets (19-6) he will now be suiting up for. The Rockets reportedly gave up 6-foot-4 shooting guard Troy Daniels and draft...
