Monday Miscellany — Volume 4

Monday Miscellany is a weekly-ish column with no real focus or direction. A mix of news, politics, sports, culture, media, reviews, trivia, local events, puppy gifs, stuff I saw on Reddit/Wikipedia & some other items perhaps only tangentially related to Minnesota. If this column has a purpose, it would be to provide you, my dear reader, with (A) a brief escape from the monotony of your Monday morning chores and duties, and (B) some topics to talk about should you encounter an awkward silence during an upcoming first date. I used to love comic books movies. And then I turned 12. Links to Monday Miscellany...

Movie Review - Brutal and Bizarre, 'Avengers: Infinity War' Is Likely to Ruffle a Few Feathers

Since the first Avengers movie, everything has led up to Avengers: Infinity War with Thanos coming into town and challenging Earth’s mightiest heroes. First briefly appearing in Avengers, making a much larger in presence in Guardians of the Galaxy, and having a quick credit scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thanos is a larger-than-life villain Marvel teased over a long span of time. And, thankfully, after all the waiting, they give us a great payoff with the villain, quality time with the heroes, and a brutal and bizarre story that defies expectations. Look,...

Movie Review - 'A Quiet Place' is a New Horror Classic

It’s rare to have a perfect combination of creativity and talent totally execute on a vision. With film, this is especially true. Perhaps the director doesn’t interpret the screenplay correctly, the screenwriter wrote a bad script, or the actors are phoning it in. Whatever the reason, movies are a collaborative effort and somewhere down the line, something doesn’t entirely hold up. This is not the case for A Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski and written by Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and Krasinski. Well-crafted, focused, and sharp as a knife, this film grabs hold of you from the first scene and doesn’t let go. It builds and cultivates tension like...

Free 'Super Troopers 2' Screening!

Super Troopers is one of those beloved, cult comedies that people can quote over and over. The movie came out 17 years ago (wow, that sure makes me feel old) and still to this day is one of my favorite comedies. Broken Lizard, the comedy troupe behind the aforementioned title, Club Dread, Beerfest and Slammin' Salmon, has wanted to make a Super Troopers 2 for years -- but it never quite got the traction needed to be made (a lot of that had to due to the project not getting studio support, i.e. funding). So the Broken Lizard guys took...

US Map Shows Most Popular Netflix Shows in 2017

[caption id="attachment_1315705" align="aligncenter" width="710"] Netflix Original Series 'Mindhunter'[/caption] The breadth of the content within the Netflix library is something to behold. While once there was a handful of options, like a few solid movies and network shows, now there is more fantastic content being produced by Netflix that it's impossible to keep up with. Everyone has their own favorite shows and movies on Netflix -- we could argue about our favorites until we are blue in the face. My wife and I constantly re-watch The Office and Parks and Recreation because these shows are comedy gold -- we also use...

United Airlines Embargo Grounds Pets Around The World

Imagine if Amazon announced that they were halting all deliveries for six weeks and would let us know later if they were ever going to come back into the business. That is the hidden impact of the three recent, astonishing United Airlines pet travel mishaps.

United sent a Kansas City-bound dog to Japan; fatally stowed a snub nose dog in the overhead bin; and was forced to make an unplanned landing in Akron to get another dog to its correct destination. When those incidents occur over three days, something is bound to hit the fan and their Board of Directors quickly met to quell the media carnage.
