Twins Pitching Coach Arrested on Suspicion of Drunken Driving

It was reported late Thursday that Minnesota Twins Pitching coach Neil Allen was suspended indefinitely following a DWI arrest early Thursday morning. According to the report, Allen was stopped by Hennepin County Sheriff’s Officers at Sixth Street and Park Avenue at around 2 a.m. in Minneapolis. Allen refused a test and was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving. He was booked in the Hennepin County Jail around 4 a.m. and was released around 10:30 a.m. The Twins organization had this to say in a statement.
“The Minnesota Twins are aware of the...

Airlines Bum Rush For Havana—No Guns at Their Heads This Time
Bouncing through First Class, Northwest Flight attendant Margaret Burt could have popped right off the silver screen as another Rachel McAdams. Or maybe a Catch Me If You Can stewardess with that plaid pillbox hat framing her cherubic face, and blond hair pinned up in a stylish bob. A little surprised when she offered the swarthy-looking man in the first row his Regal Imperial dinner, and he asked for aspirin instead? Later during initial descent into Miami, Burt reminded him to fasten his seat belt. Sure, that could occasionally...

Movie Review -- 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Disappoints

Having seen Return of the Jedi, four teenagers leave the theater and discuss which of the three Star Wars movies were better. One argues for Empire Strikes Back, the other A New Hope, and finally the last one says, “Well, we all know the third movie is always the worst.” Did I mention this was a scene from X-Men: Apocalypse? Bryan Singer’s tongue-in-cheek humor, and his own critique of the film (and the nature of trilogies) was funny, but also telling of his attitude...

Flashback to Soundset 2015

Soundset 2016

With Soundset 2016 coming up this week, we here at Minnesota Connected thought it might be a timely moment to remember some of the highlights to the conversations we had last year. A Quarter of the MLB Season Complete -- Twins Struggles Are Many

miguel sano - twins - 2016 awful

The Minnesota Twins have had an awful start to the season. They are 14.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox who lead the American League Central. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. The offense seems to be running on fumes. The starting pitching at times has been inconsistent. As for the bullpen, it seems like these days you expect a bad performance by most of the relief core. Not only that, the Twins have been shuffling players on and off the 25-man roster either due to injury or lack of performance. Losing streaks of nine and eight games certainly didn’t help matters. ...

Movie Review -- 'Angry Birds' Will Be Another Forgotten Video Game Adaptation

Cinematic history has not looked fondly upon video games adapted to film. Along that road lies dozens of failed attempts to recreate the magic of some of the most classic video games, including Mario Bros., Final Fantasy, and Street Fighter. While some video game adaptations have done better than others, none have passed the test of time. The Angry Birds Movie, I can safely say, will not pass the test of time, but will provide a nice piece of eye candy and a few laughs for you and your family before the next Pixar movie comes along and makes you completely forget this movie...

Highlights of Southern Ireland

the blarney house

I used to think the idea of Ireland being completely and richly green was probably a stereotype, but that didn’t last for long. That idea was dashed before my plane even landed. As I gazed out the window, as soon as the clouds dispersed the first thing I saw was emerald as far as the eye can see. It took my breath away from that very moment and I didn’t get it back until I left the country.

During my week spent in Ireland, I devoted most of my time to exploring the city of Cork where I was staying. In the Cork city centre, there are numerous attractions...

Act Addresses Gender Gaps for Women of Color in Minnesota

Rep. Moran

Rep. Rena Moran, who represents district 65A in St. Paul, has been the key author of the Women of Color Opportunities Act. Moran recognizes gender gaps women of color have had to face and the negative effects it has had for our communities. Moran understands this issue better than most as she illustrates the gender gap by being the only African American woman serving in the Minnesota State Legislature.

To stem the effects of this gender gap, Moran has sought to create a comprehensive piece of legislature that is designed to address gender gaps for women of color in education and the workforce. A video of her speaking about it can be found ...
