'Baauer' & 'RL Grime' @ Skyway Theatre

Baauer The last time Baauer was in town, it was at the peak of 'Harlem Shake' mania and the show sold out.  This time around, not so much.  Obviously the 'Harlem Shake' got played, and played, and played, so it's no wonder it isn't the draw it was just a few months back. That's not to say we didn't get a good show, because we did.
Something I didn't realize until they went on was this was a 'B2B' set.  Meaning Baauer and RL Grime played along side each other, not one after the other.  So, not only do you get to hear two talented DJs drop hit after hit on you together, but you get to watch two guys, working together, and having a blast doing it.  I'm sure the bottle...

'Yeah Yeah Yeahs' @ First Avenue

2013-06-25 14.42.44 Easily one of the best, most entertaining shows I've seen this year. Karen O puts on such an amazing display, it's almost not human. Monday night, First Ave was absolutely packed. Sold out of course, but also packed. Like, couldn't get near the stage, packed. Like, couldn't find a decent spot to see, packed. During their almost 90 minutes, including one encore, they filled a third of their set with material of their new album, 'Mosquito' and the rest covered their previous 5 albums.
The audience was obviously enjoying themselves the entire time, but when 30 minutes in they played 'Heads Will Roll', things got taken up a notch. Everyone went ape...

'Questlove' and 'DAngelo': Brothers In Arms - A Two Man Show @ First Avenue

2013-06-25 14.42.09 Remember back in 2000 there was that video of that guy in cornrows that was just him singing naked. Well, 13 years later he doesn't have nearly the same body but he absolutely has the same voice. D'Angelo, along with ?uestlove, are doing a few gigs called Brothers In Arms. As ?uestlove put it, it was a way for the 2 of them to play together and do what they do in the studio and allow the audience to be the fourth wall.
For nearly two hours the two seemed to just jam together. D'Angelo mostly sat behind a couple of keyboards, while...

It’s Always Sunny in the Twin Cities

[caption id="attachment_268" align="aligncenter" width="624"]Photo Credit: Nattapol Pornsalnutwat Photo Credit: Nattapol Pornsalnutwat[/caption] You know the situation: You wake up in the morning on a beautiful, sunshiny day with big plans to hit the beach with a cooler and friends or take the kids to the park. You pull back the drapes, expecting to be greeted by the bright, warm sun. Instead, you are faced with grey skies laced with dark, heavy clouds and pouring rain. Shoot. This must mean you’ll be spending your day in bed. Or maybe you’ll have to fight the kids to keep them inside, hoping to entertain them with broken toys and movies they’ve...

Patina is a Twin Cities Store You Need to See For Yourself

Patina_Minnesota

Patina is a Minnesota-based chain of shops which sell everything from odd iPhone stands to mugs shaped like owls. This past Saturday, I found myself strolling around it for hours trying to take in all of the little novelty items inside. There are several locations in the Twin Cities and after visiting two of the stops in the St. Paul area, it’s clear why the store is such a local success. Though the items may ome with a higher price, the shop has the perfect gift for absolutely any type of person for any occasion. When first walking into the store, you’re met with the sounds...

'Vaudeville' Restores Hope in Local Music

Vaudeville_Vendetta In today’s urban society, when most people consider local music, we tend to think of a soft coffee shop cabaret or a ukulele on the street corner. It seems as though the term “rock group” has gone by the wayside, reminding us of yesteryear, moving aside for a more urban sound where, unfortunately, many musicians share a musical similitude. Over the past four years, however, the winds have been shifting and the tides turning. Enter Vaudeville. A local Minnesota band with humble beginnings is taking on the Twin Cities and is restoring hope in the Rock and Roll fanbase. Vaudeville’s second album, 'Vendetta' packs...

Gardenhire & Twins Need to Refocus or Separate

2013 Disappointing Minnesota Twins Wrapping up a disappointing weekend series with the Division leading Detroit Tigers, the Minnesota Twins sit timidly at 30-36, fourth place in the American League Central. Not immune to the speculation of the direction of the club is none other than Twins manager, Ron Gardenhire. Gardenhire has in 11 seasons mismanaged a club capable of making a serious run at the World Series into a group of men unable to win a midweek series all season, with exception being the Twins’ sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers May 27-30. Although Gardy still has 3 and half more months to turn the season around, if a step in the right...

Late Season Morel Mushrooms Aplenty

Morel Mushrooms While many Minnesotans are seriously lacking when it comes to sporting a tan in 2013, look on the bright side: a cool, wet spring has produced one of the best crops of morel mushrooms in years. If you have no idea what a morel mushroom is, now is the time to learn. Primarily because they are still growing in the forest, though also because Minnesotans should be aware of what edible (and free) products are available in their forests. Free and delicious, a combination few can refuse. Morel mushrooms are easily identifiable, edible fungi that are common throughout the United States, including most parts of Minnesota....
