The final three games, they won by one run including Sunday’s 4-3 victory in 12 innings. This week, the Twins continued their ten-game road trip in Tampa Bay against the Rays, who are also contending for second Wild Card spot. This weekend, they will open up a six-game home stand with a three-game...

MSP Runway Ban: $624 Million Dollar White Elephant?

Landing_at_Zurich_International_Airport

On July 24th, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) suspended landings on the 2005-built South-North runway 35. A year ago that route over Apple Valley and Bloomington flowed an estimated 17 percent of landings into MSP. In the first two weeks of August, the new ban brought that traffic down to a trickle at .5 percent. The FAA imposed the restriction to prevent converging runway operations that could facilitate a midair crash if a pilot aborted a landing. While the directive affects planes arriving from Dakota County, it also dramatically reduces the MSP airport’s arrival capacity from...

Movie Review -- 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Never Reaches Its Full Potential

unclethumb1

Loosely based on the concept of the mid-late 60s spy drama of the same name, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. effectively stands as a prequel/original story for the main two protagonists of the earlier series and recent film, American agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and Russian spy Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer). At first happenstance, the two meet as mortal rival spies one night in Soviet East Berlin, Solo tasked to disappear Gaby Teller (Alicia Vikander) from behind the Iron Curtain and Illya ordered to stop the two from crossing the Capitalist/Communist checkpoint Charlie with extreme prejudice. Teller’s father,...

Crash Wreckage and Fresh Evidence of a Minnesotan’s Courage

Amelia_Earhart_-_GPN-2002-000211

A piece of fuselage combed from a remote beach. Toiletry items, jars and a knife sent back to the laboratory for verification, while families and friends skeptically reject the evidence. A modern day Malaysia Air drama? No this is the Amelia Earhart search, 78 years old yet active, alive and kicking. The third expedition by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) hell-bent on finding Amelia Earhart’s lost Lockheed aircraft was completed last month. In previous missions the Group has employed search teams, scuba divers and a manned submersible submarine to uncover a 19 by 23 inch piece of metal...

Does Your Outrage Over Cecil the Lion Make Sense?

Cecil_the_lion_at_Hwange_National_Park_(4516560206)

I think hunting is stupid. I mean, I have many friends and family members who hunt, and I don’t have any ethical qualms about hunting in general. In fact, there seem to be plenty of circumstances where hunting could be seen as a “good” thing — where the hunted animal will serve to provide necessary food, clothing, etc. for the hunter -- where the species being hunted is detrimentally overpopulating an area, or directly threatening the human population. I just happen to think violently destroying living creatures with arrows and bullets for no other reason apart from “sport”...

Minnesota Basketball Teams Make Moves

Chicago Sky at Washington Mystics June 11, 2011

The two major league basketball teams in the state of Minnesota have both recently made moves to bolster their respective rosters. The Timberwolves and its sister club, the Lynx both acquired new players, hoping to provide both leadership and statistical improvement. The Wolves made the signing of 39-year-old point guard Andre Miller official Aug. 3, a move that is much more likely to bring poise and leadership to the backcourt behind Ricky Rubio and Zach LaVine than outright production. He looks to be the guard equivalent of KG's frontcourt mentorship and ...
