Movie Review -- 'Jurassic World' Thrills
Jurassic World comes to life every bit the dream that John Hammond imagined for his own Jurassic Park in 1993 -- children running, laughing through the park while awe struck parents follow behind, large majestic dinosaurs on display for the world to finally see. Trust me, they spared no expense! But alas, nothing gold can stay. A new, fully loaded, genetically created dinosaur, not fully understood by her creators, and quite terrifying, hits center stage. Indominus Rex! Ian Malcom said it best in The Lost World, “Oh, yeah. Oooh, ahhh, that's how it always starts. Then later there's running and um, screaming.”
Director Colin Trevorrow does a fantastic job of bringing this new but familiar world to the big screen. Holding such a big franchise in your hands can be a daunting task, especially considering that last two weren’t up to par with their predecessor. While Jurassic Park is one of my all-time favorite movies, I went into Jurassic World with very little expectations. If this fourth flick failed it would be the final nail in the Jurassic franchises’ metaphorical coffin. I am extremely happy to report that any doubt that I had was completely blown out of the water.
From the second we see the sweeping camera shots showing us the island and through the park, I started creeping closer to the edge of my seat. Once the Indominus Rex started reaping havoc I was well past the edge of my seat. Jurassic World brought me back to my six year-old self who sat in a dark theater one June day twenty two years ago, terrified as a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex broke out of his enclosure and brought a young boys nightmare to life. That awe struck, stomach churning feeling came rushing back while I watched this movie and it was truly an amazing experience. After it was all said and done, I wanted to stay and experience it all over again.
For those doubters, give this one a chance. For those Jurassic Park fans, as Samuel L. Jackson so eloquently stated, "Hold onto your butts."
