'Jungle' @ Fine Line Music Cafe

Jungle-Fine-Line-Music-Cafe-Minneapolis-June-1

Given the limited or non existent appearances of the band Jungle up to this point, it came as no surprise the confusion the audience had when first seeing the band. The group from Britain has only released a handful of songs, along with a few videos. Those videos and promo pictures definitely insinuate who the band is, but that might not lead to the fact they are four white guys and a girl (at least that's who showed up in Minneapolis last week). I over heard a couple different, "that's not who I expected to see at all" and a "is that them?" from people around...

'Kishi Bashi' @ Fine Line Music Cafe

Friday, the Fine Line Music Cafe hosted Kishi Bashi, a violinist, songwriter, and beat boxer, who put on one of the most musically diverse and interesting shows you'll see. Real name Kaoru Ishibashi, he's toured and performed with the likes of Regina Spektor and of Montreal. When the lights went down, we heard the intro off the new album (which was just released two weeks go) "Debut - Impromptu." Ishibashi, along with Tall Tall Trees on banjo,...

'St. Lucia' @ Fine Line Music Cafe

StLucia_Minneapolis_2014_8 As the lights went down last Sunday night, signaling the impending arrival of the St Lucia to the stage at the Fine Line, David Bowie's "Let's Dance" played. Almost as much of an invitation it was a suggestion and preview of the next 75 minutes. When Jean-Philip Grobler arrived he crowned Minneapolis the coldest city in the universe, which on that night, wasn't far from the truth. Starting off with "The Night Comes Again" provided the audience the warmth and glow they likely won't see for another few months with all five members playing with so much enthusiasm, you couldn't even tell how much of a shock they...

"... the music just takes on a slightly different meaning in the cold weather, but I like to think that it still makes people feel like it's summer a little bit."
St Lucia was started in 2010 by Jean-Philip Grobler, a Johannesburg born, former member of a boys choir and current Brooklynite. The band, best known for their warm summery, electro-pop sounds, will be visiting sub zero tundra of Minneapolis for the first time this weekend. We were able to ask Grobler a few questions ahead of his visit -- and although St. Lucia has been warned about the cold,...

'Black Moth Super Rainbow' (w/ 'The Hood Internet') @ Fine Line Music Cafe

2013-05-14 16.53.53 For a Monday night, this was a really great show to see. First up was The Hood Internet. These guys have been around since 2007 releasing some really awesome mixtapes. They've even been through Minneapolis a number of times, but I've missed them every time, so it was great finally catching them live. Tonight manning the decks was just one half of the Hood Internet team,...
