'Haim' @ First Avenue

Haim-First-Avenue-May-2014-1

"I don't give a shit if it's a Monday, let's rage!" declared Este Haim, the enthusiastic bass player of the trio of sisters known has Haim.

The hair band finally arrived in Minneapolis to play a long since sold out show at First Avenue, and it was hard to tell who the bigger fans were -- the audience of the band, or the band of First Avenue. Stopping multiple times to give homage to ...

'Chromeo' @ First Avenue

Chromeo-First-Avenue-May-2014-5 "This is what a Tuesday night looks like in Minneapolis," Dave 1 pleasantly realized at Chromeo's mid-week stop at First Avenue. He and P-Thugg, his quiet vocoder loving partner, burned down Minneapolis while out on their tour promoting their new album White Women, which is due May 12th. The DJ duo/producer Oliver, opened the show and set the energy level high. Mixing a solid 45 minutes of beat heavy songs it was impossible to not stand still. Dave 1 later explained that Oliver produced the song, "Frequent Flier" on their new album. ...

First Avenue to Host Beer Rally on St. Patrick’s Day

Minnesota Liquor -Sunday-sales-first avenue event

First Avenue brandishes the most eclectic mixture of content for any venue in the Twin Cities. Concerts, dance parties, “professional wrestling” and (under the right circumstances) rallies for a cause. What cause is worth your St. Patrick’s Day celebration? Why Minnesota liquor sales on Sunday of course! Many have their reasons for opposing the sale of liquor on Sunday; but if you are opposed to it, this is great opportunity to party...

Pair of Outdoor Music Festivals Cancel in Twin Cities

Dave_Matthews_Rivers_Edge_Erik_Hess Chicago has its Lollapalooza. Austin, Texas is saturated with its outdoor-music scene. Even some field in the middle-of-nowhere in Tennessee has a huge music festival. That's why it was so hard to hear about the plans to cancel two major outdoor music festivals in the Twin Cities this summer. Sure, it's crazy cold in the Twin Cities for a large chunk of the year. But come on, keep the outdoor music alive! Via: ...

'Atmosphere' - Welcome to MN 2014 Tour @ First Avenue

Atmosphere-WelcometoMN-First-Avenue-2014-5

Monday night at First Avenue saw the conclusion of the 2014 Welcome to MN tour. A week back I interviewed Slug about this "homecoming" tour -- though some may have had off Monday for Presidents' Day, they likely didn't have off Tuesday, but that reality didn't dampen the party vibe one bit. By the time Atmosphere took the stage around 10:30 pm, the mainroom was drunk, figuratively and literally. Slug, dressed in a long puffy winter coat, casually sauntered...

'Neutral Milk Hotel' @ First Avenue

Neutral Milk Hotel First Avenue 2014

There are two camps when it comes to Neutral Milk Hotel: those who are deeply in love with the band and those who have never heard of the band (I'm part of the latter). Neutral Milk Hotel is a band from the mid to late nineties that released two albums -- then they disappeared for the next 16 years until late 2013 when they announced a string of tour dates which ultimately brought them to do two sold out nights at First Avenue. Jeff Mangum, the band's singer, songwriter, and guitarist had essentially packed it all in shortly after the release of the final...

89.3 The Current's 9th Birthday Party (Friday) @ First Avenue

Current_9th_Birthday_StrangeNames

Last Friday night, First Avenue hosted the first of two nights celebrating The Current's 9th birthday party. Most of The Current DJs and staff were on hand to fulfill hosting duties throughout the weekend, which gave it a real 'happy birthday' vibe. If you weren't lucky enough to get tickets, which were offered to MPR members first and sold out days before the shows, you could have listened to the live broadcast on the radio. Friday night showcased the talents of Actual Wolf, Strange Names, Lizzo, and Har Mar Superstar. I unfortunately missed Actual Wolf...

'Darkside' @ First Avenue

'Darkside' @ First Avenue - Minneapolis

Darkside stopped by First Ave on Saturday night for what was a very exciting, yet sometimes boring (and I mean that in the nicest way possible) show. It was exactly what I thought it would be and more, but in the end, it was a 90 minute concert that could have easily been 60 minutes. Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrinton are amazing musicians. That was obvious. The music they make is beautiful, haunting, and soulful.  Harrinton manipulated his guitar to set the mood and Jaar added subtle layers of sound to bone shaking bass throughout the night.  When things were slow, they were really slow, which gave the...

My Top Five Concerts of 2013

Pretty Lights @ Myth Live

2013 was a fantastic year for live music in Minnesota with an endless number of options. I wished I could have attended more shows, but in the end, I value my marriage, day job, and sleep. Though, in 2013 I did attend more shows in a single year that I ever had before, 38 concerts to be exact. That's a concert every 9.5 days. I definitely couldn't have done that without the support of my wife. Thanks Carrie! Just a heads up though, I already have tickets to ten shows in 2014, but I promise I'll be quiet when I get home. Here are my top 5 most enjoyable shows of 2013:
5. ...

'Doomtree' Blowout IX @ First Avenue

photo 1

My 'Doomtree Blowout' cherry has finally been, well, blown out so-to-speak. In it's 9th year, I attended night two of a four night engagement, primarily at First Avenue's Mainroom. The almost two and a half hour show treated the sold out crowd to two different shows Friday night. A show, within a show, within a show if you will. photo 7 The...
