'The Floating Library' Brings Books Offshore

Cedar Lake Floating Library

You're out on the lake, soaking in the sun and enjoying the last few weeks of summer. The only thing missing? A good book. Luckily, the new project The Floating Library can give you just that. The Floating Library is a public art project started by Sarah Peters that works to bring books and printed matter to people visiting urban lakes. The project is run from a custom-made raft that features built-in bookshelves. The material is kept dry by protective covers. The library is open to anyone who paddles up to it. The raft is manned by librarians who help readers check out their book choices. The library offers collections from artists all over the country. The Floating Library will make its first appearance on the waters of Cedar Lake, near the Cedar Point Beach. The library will be afloat Aug. 16-17, 23-24 and 30-31. Doors will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will also make an appearance on Lake Winona on Sept. 13.   Photo via: yadem.hayseed
